Pox virus. Secondary eczema may occur around lesions. Secondary bacterial infection may occur producing crusting, erythema and suppuration. However, these same changes may be seen during spontaneous resolution which occurs in most within several months leaving normal skin or small varicelliform scars. simulate warts or skin tags but they have a distinct histological appearance with lobulated downgrowths of epidermal cells containing intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies.
Surprisingly resistant to chemical therapies. With multiple small lesions in a young child spontaneous resolution should be awaited. The most definitive treatment is deroofing of the lesion with a large cutting-edged needle and wiping out the contents. The lesion itself is virtually anesthetic and this procedure can be performed almost painlessly with large lesions.
Children should shower rather than bath and avoid heated swimming pools and spas; with these precautions the number of lesions spontaeously disappearing soon outweighs the number of new lesions appearing and the overall numbers drop off.
